As the deadline for the REAL ID Act approaches, Hunter Insurance wants to make sure that Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut residents understand the rules, deadlines, and requirements for meeting the new federal-standard for identification.
At the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 as part of an effort to improve safety and security at airports, federal facilities, and military bases. State and federal authorities say the new identification standard will help keep citizens safer.
On October 1, 2020, individuals boarding international flights will need to present a REAL ID to TSA officials to get on their plane. The new identification standard is not mandatory since you can also use your US Passport, military card or other federally approved identification to board domestic flights, or enter secure federal or military sites. Arms dealers may also need to see a REAL ID for you to purchase firearms and ammunition.
Many Americans may find it easier to simply have a REAL ID to avoid having to research different scenarios that might require the new license. For instance, you may be wondering whether you need the new identification card to enter a post office? Fortunately, you don’t need one for that purpose because post offices are not considered ‘secure’ federal facilities.
The process for obtaining a REAL ID is similar to obtaining a driver’s license. You can apply for REAL ID during or outside of your driver’s license renewal period, but you may need to provide additional documents and it must be presented in person. Applicants should provide proof of identity, proof of social security, and proof of residency documents in order to submit an application. An acceptable application might include a birth certificate, your social security card, and an electric bill paired with a cable bill. Additional documents may be needed if you recently changed your name. Check your state’s Division of Motor Vehicles website for more information about acceptable documents you can submit.
A federally compliant REAL ID features a gold or black star on the upper right-hand corner of the card. If your card states “Federal Limits Apply” in the same corner, then you do not have a REAL ID identification card. In the State of Rhode Island, the DMV encourages residents to wait until their renewal period to update their identification to the newer standard unless business travel or other circumstances necessitate having a REAL ID.
Hunter Insurance encourages individuals, families, and business professionals to prepare for the updated identification requirements to avoid travel interruptions or inconveniences as we approach the deadline. You can also learn more about the new requirements here.
