Catalytic converter thefts are skyrocketing across the country. According to State Farm Insurance, claims for stolen catalytic converters doubled in the year ending June 2022.
But why have thefts increased so dramatically?
Catalytic converters, which help a car clean its exhaust, are a target for theft because of the price of precious metals, such as palladium and platinum, that are used in the parts. Additionally, they are relatively easy to steal because they are located on the exterior of the car’s underside and can be removed within 30-seconds with a battery-operated saw.
There are some preventative measures you can take to prevent the theft of your car’s catalytic converter. Insurance companies, mechanics and police departments recommend car owner’s employ a wide range of anti-theft measures.
One of the simplest solutions is to keep your car from public view when you are not using it, such as in a garage. If you do not have access to a garage, park your car in a well-lit area or near a security camera.
In some US cities, workshops have been held in which car owners can have their vehicle identification numbers engraved on the catalytic converters for free. The goal of this is to indicate to potential buyers that the part has been stolen. Some experts even recommend spray-painting the converter with a brightly colored, high temperature paint, which would discourage a would-be thief from stealing it.
