Insuring Your College Student

If your son or daughter is preparing to begin or return to college this fall, the to-do lists are likely already piling up. While this is a busy time of shopping, packing, and planning, Hunter Insurance would like to remind families to dedicate some time to considering their child’s insurance options while they are away at school.

The kids may be ready to leave the nest, but it’s important that they do so with the right protection. To help make this transition a little easier, we have put together some helpful tips on how to approach insuring your college student.

  • Renter’s insurance – U.S. News and World Report advises that if your student is planning on living in an on-campus dorm, their possessions are most likely still covered by your home insurance policy. However, it’s always a good idea to talk with your agent before the big move in case you have any questions. If your student will be living off-campus in a rented apartment or house, they will need renter’s insurance to protect their possessions.
  • Auto Insurance – According to Trusted Choice, if your child is going to take a car with them to school, you should speak with us to go over any possible changes to your policy. This can occur if your child is attending school out-of-state. However, they should be able to remain on your family’s policy. Factors such as location, type of car, credit history, driving amount, and driving record can possibly help you save money on your car insurance. If your student is not already covered by a family policy, they will need to purchase a plan. Many plans offer student discounts for good grades—a great incentive to avoid skipping class!
  • Electronics or Dorm Insurance – For a student living off-campus, most of their possessions will be covered by their renter’s insurance. However, Consumer Reports suggests that it may be a good idea to also purchase additional electronics or valuables insurance since deductibles for renter’s insurance and homeowner’s insurance can run high.
  • Identity Theft Insurance – College students are often a target for identity thieves. While you should encourage your student to be vigilant with their personal information, insuring them in case of fraud can provide your family with additional peace of mind. Speak with one of our agents to find out what your options for identity theft insurance are.

Hunter Insurance wishes you and your students the best of luck in the upcoming school year! Feel free to call us at 401.769.9500 with any questions or to request a review of your insurance portfolio.
