Hunter Insurance Announces American Flag Collection Drive in Support of Boy Scout Troop 1 of Manville’s Flag Retirement Ceremony
LINCOLN, RI (May 31, 2018) — Hunter Insurance has announced that the agency will be accepting worn, damaged or unused American flags for Boy Scout Troop 1 of Manville, RI. All flags collected will be properly disposed of by Troop 1 in a ceremonial flag burning on July 1st. A collection box is located at the Hunter Insurance office, 389 Old River Road in Manville, RI through June.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, a ceremonial burning is the most proper way to retire the American flag, and Hunter Insurance is honored to join their local Boy Scout Troop in this patriotic show of respect for the nation’s colors. “We are happy to help Troop 1 in their patriotic endeavor to make sure the retired flags in our community are disposed of properly and with honor,” said Brian Hunter, president of Hunter Insurance.
The Boy Scouts of America are one of the only organizations in the country that has official code for the retirement of the American Flag. These guidelines are outlined in the Boy Scouts of America handbook.
During a ceremonial flag burning, the flags will be customarily folded and then burned completely to ash so that they are no longer recognizable. The ceremony is to be conducted with dignity and respect for the stars and stripes and all that they represent.
